German, English and a little bit of French. I learned it in school for seven years. Funny, I know the grammar but not the words. Maybe I just foung a New Year resolution: improve my French.
Well, French and English obviously...I also do well in Spanish and Italian. Oh, I also know sign language, does that count as "speaking" a language???
thanks!! I was thinking to off again, with one of those self learning tape programm and look how far I come. I might take another course in college, but I will sure consult you for qestions I
have!!
I love languages and study them a lot for fun (Major Geek Alert!) Sign language took two years to feel comfortable even trying, but I've done really well a few times when I was working in restaurants and had deaf clients. THey were MOST impressed they could order without their friends or family interpreting into a voiced language!!!! It made me feel soooo good that I've kept it up. I'm rusty on a bunch of it, but so fast at spelling that I get by quite well!
Spanish and Italian are GORGEOUS languages...and I admit, when I hear my husband speaking either of them (he also speaks English, French and German on top of those two) I get a little flushed
LOL!
If you want to do one at home, there is a fabulous series that a friend of mine used...damn it if I could remember it right now! I'll try to remember the name and post it! I listened to the CDs and I was quite impressed with it!
I only know some single spanish sentences, like my name is and how old i am. I probably have to get started on that again too. I learned a little bit Spanish when I did an exchange year in the States. I think I still have all the exercise books, I have to look that up!
I've been asked a lot if it ever gets confusing to switch between languages and there are times when it IS hard or I totally blank on what people are saying to me (or I'm reading) and panic. However, for the most part, with practice, it is easier and easier to compartmentalize each language into its own part of my brain. Knowing French helps with Spanish and Italian, if I get stuck I can return to the French word and they usually know what I mean.
Mmm.. do you know if the Rosseta Stone language learning series that is always advertised works?
Rosetta Stone works really well, but you should use it in conjunction with other books (ie a dictionary and some basic grammar texts) because I find they miss out on a few steps sometimes. But it's VERY good for attuning your ear to another language and getting you comfortable with it!!
don't know this series, but i still have the books from school and some good additional grammar books, too.
I think they're expensive...but I'll try to find the name of the other CDs my friend used.
Time to get dinner going...á demain, ladies!!
two, japanese and english. a bit of spanish to get along but i wouldn't say i'm any good!
Wow, Japanese is impressive! I'm one of those sad Americans who speaks only English - but I will attempt another language if in that country out of respect!
English. I did Japanese lessons in primary school, 10 weeks of french & 3 years of Indonesian in high school.
i speak, English, Arabic and a bit of french, i would loooove to learn sign language and greek
no its not easy to learn at all, becuz the letters are no where near english u know what i mean? but i was kind of born with it hehe so it was easy i guess:P
Yeah if you were born with it, it would be very easy to learn step by step.
At first it was complicated but now, no..
I knew I had to be good at something!!
i speak Russian, English and TOAD - (Toad being what my BF calls my early morning growls)
